The Two Kinds of Growth
July 2, 2026The Two Kinds of Growth
I keep turning the word over in my head. Growth. Why is there such a
thing at all? Why do things grow?
It feels almost like a universal law. A seed splits and reaches for
light. A child adds kilograms it never asked for. Rivers widen, cities
sprawl, everything seems to move in the direction of more. And just like
you, I was born a child, unaware of the few kilograms I weighed, unaware
even that there was a self here to be aware of, unaware of some burning
desire we would eventually come to know as purpose. Yet, here I am now,
conscious of that self. Conscious of my weight, my race, my
imperfections wearing the disguise of ego, and, finally, of that purpose
taking shape.
The more I sat with it, the more I realised I had been using one word
for two completely different things.
The growth that happens to
you
The first kind is the growth of the body. The child becoming the man.
This one has an almost boring explanation once you look at it plainly.
Living things are systems that pull in energy and use it to build order
out of disorder, to make more structure, to make more of themselves,
before time and decay eventually win. A seed does it. A flame does it as
it spreads. A child does it, turning food and sleep into bone and
height.
I did not will a single centimetre of it. It was imposed on me. Given
the right conditions, food, safety, time, it simply happened, the way
water finds its level. This is the growth that feels like law, because
at this layer it very nearly is. It asks nothing of you. It requires no
permission and no courage. It arrives whether you are paying attention
or not.
The growth you have to
choose
Then there is the second kind, and it is not the same thing at
all.
It is not that my body got bigger. It is that something inside woke
up and turned to look at itself. That I can now see my own ego, name my
own patterns, feel the shape of my own purpose. That is not height. That
is consciousness bending back on itself and asking what it is.
And here is the part that changes everything: this kind of growth is
not a law. It is not automatic, far from it. Nobody grows in this way
just by being fed and kept safe. Most people reach the full size of
their body and then quietly stop seeking, choosing, growing. The
self-awareness they carry at forty is roughly the one they had at
twenty, the same defences, the same stories. The body finished growing
and they mistook that for being finished.
The first growth is given to you. The second you have to reach for.
And that difference is the whole point.
Why we have to cultivate
A weed grows on its own. It needs no gardener, no intention, no care.
It simply takes what is around it and sprawls.
To be cultivated is to be different. To grow because someone chose to
tend to his becoming. Someone cleared the ground, planted with intent,
returned again and again to water and prune and protect. Cultivation is
the deliberate opposite of automatic growth. It is what you get when a
person refuses to leave their becoming to chance.
That is why the word matters to me. Not “the grown man,” because
every man is grown, that is just biology doing its work. The cultivated
man. The one who took the second kind of growth, the kind that is
optional, the kind almost everyone declines, and decided to tend it on
purpose. Body, mind, craft, the world he moves through, the men he
stands beside. All of it chosen. All of it worked at.
One honest warning to self
I noticed a word hiding in my own reflection; “finally”. As if
clarity of purpose were a place I had arrived at and could now rest
in.
I do not think that is true, and I want to name it before it hardens.
The moment self-awareness feels like an arrival is usually the moment
ego has repackaged itself as enlightenment and slipped back in through
the side door. Real awareness seems to be a practice, not a destination.
A weeding that is never quite done.
So the cultivated man probably never gets to say “finally.” He does
not reach the summit and plant a flag. He just keeps tending. Keeps
clearing the ground. Keeps choosing the second kind of growth, on the
ordinary days as much as the inspired ones.
That is what this place is. A record of the tending. If you are here,
I suspect you already feel the difference between the growth that
happened to you and the growth you have to choose.
The question is only whether you will tend it.
